What is mental health?

Mental health is a state of emotional and psychological wellbeing.  It is the ability to enjoy life and cope with stress. Mental health means how you feel, think, and act. If you are mentally healthy, your mental health is strong and resilient. It is not just about being unhappy or having a mental illness.

What does therapy do?

Therapy helps people to identify the root causes of their distress and provides help for these issues.  It can help people to change their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Therapy is a safe place to explore difficult emotions and experiences.

Why go to therapy if I can just talk to my family or friends about what is bothering me?

While family and friends may be able to provide support, therapists have specific training in helping people with mental health issues. This person can provide an outside perspective, unbiased support, guidance, and counseling.  They are also better equipped with the necessary skills to help people get through difficult times.

Therapy can be a confidential place where you can work on improving your well-being without judgment or fear of repercussion.

Do I have to be depressed or anxious for therapy to work?

There are different types of therapists that may specialize in different areas such as depression or anxiety. Some therapists specialize in helping high-functioning people improve relationships, work, or personal habits. It is not necessary to be diagnosed with a mental illness to seek therapy.

How do I find a therapist?

Therapists can often be found through insurance providers or by searching online for private practitioners. Providers who accept your insurance plan or help you access out-of-network reimbursement will also help you save money on the cost of sessions. Some therapists have a sliding scale fee for times of hardship.

What if I don’t like my therapist?

If after a few sessions you find that you do not like your therapist, it is okay to consult with another provider. Therapists should be willing to work with you to find a provider that is a good fit for you.

How often do I need to go to therapy?

This depends on the individual and their goals. Generally, sessions are held once a week or every other week. Talk to your therapist about what they recommend and what you feel comfortable with.

Can I stop going to therapy if I feel better?

Talk to your therapist about planning for the end of treatment. Often, you will increase the time between sessions as you get better instead of abruptly ending treatment. For some, they may choose to continue in therapy after they reach their initial goals. Therapy goals can shift to self-improvement, helping you identify triggers and patterns long after the initial issues have been resolved.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of sessions varies depending on where you live and the level of experience of the therapist. Make sure to get the therapist's fee ahead of time and ensure that you are comfortable with paying that fee.

What should I do if I am having suicidal thoughts?

If you are feeling unsafe, please call 911 or the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 800-273-TALK (800-273-8225). You can also go to your nearest emergency room where a psychiatrist or Social Worker can evaluate you.
